The Brain—is wider than the Sky—
For—put them side by side—
The one the other will contain
With ease—and You—beside—
For—put them side by side—
The one the other will contain
With ease—and You—beside—
The Brain is deeper than the sea—
For—hold them—Blue to Blue—
The one the other will absorb—
As Sponges—Buckets—do—
For—hold them—Blue to Blue—
The one the other will absorb—
As Sponges—Buckets—do—
The Brain is just the weight of God—
For—Heft them—Pound for Pound—
And they will differ—if they do—
As Syllable from Sound—
For—Heft them—Pound for Pound—
And they will differ—if they do—
As Syllable from Sound—
Emily Dickinson
Ah, Gina, you could post a poem from Emily every day!
ReplyDeleteThis is a particularly good one for Sunday and replaces a visit to church nicely. Why should I have to look for God in the church when I can find him/her/it hiding in the convolutions of my brain ...?
I found this poem in a poetry book someone lent me recenty and I was instantly drawn to it. I like Emily Dickinson's thought processes throughout her poems.
ReplyDeleteGreat Snippet!
Great! Great! more E.D.!
ReplyDeleteThis poem is brilliant. Thanks for posting it.
Back next sunday!
Holy Cow.
ReplyDeleteThat woman should write this stuff down - it's pretty good!!
You know, that first line grabbed me. I might have to actually read some more of her poetry. (This piece you posted is my first actually.)
ReplyDeleteFrancis - :-) So right!
ReplyDeleteSpangle - it is a good one, isn't it?
Aguja - there is always some Emily Dickinson going on 'round here! I live in ED country, with her estate being only about 20 miles south of me. I visit regularly.
CR - when are you going to finally visit the ED house? You've only lived just minutes away from it all your life! ;-)
Yogi - wow! It thrills me that you read your first ED poem here!
