Oliver Stone on Hugo Chavez, Hugo Chavez on Hugo Chavez and Hugo Chavez on Venezuala

I am Portuguese by birth and categorically, Latina. Perhaps that's why I have always had an interest in and concern about Latin America. Particularly the long-standing U.S. aggression in that part of the continent. The thumb on the little guys down there, who are simply trying to govern their nations independent of U.S. control. Besides, I can understand Latin American Spanish better than Spaniard Spanish. ;-). I'm not quite sure why but sorry to digress.

I just reiceved this video in email from Just Foreign Policy, a group I support annually with any leftover pennies from the change jar. It's a clip from Oliver Stone's new film South of the Border and that title has just gone to the top of the list of movies I have to try to seek out very soon.

The quote I have for you below from the South of the Border is emblematic of the political values I grew up with in my family.

And perhaps this is one thing that keeps us going. The optimism, the faith, the hope. And the concrete evidence that we can change the course of history. It's possible, Oliver!

  1. I loved the President who said he would be worried if the American media spoke well of him

we need leaders with balls like this here, truly of the people, not an Obama centrist who spends months making nice with his enemies and accepts apologies for being insulted in Congress

we need someone with real balls - I suggest a woman ;)

  2. I know too little about the Latin American politics. We are glad with the new North American president Obama. He is very popular in my country!
    Thanks for your visit!

  3. I've seen a documentary about the movie and I'm very curious about it.

I have visited 10 or 11 countries in Central and South America and, as a portuguese, I can see why it's easier for you to understand Latin American spanish! :-)

  4. Di and Wil - Obama is in such a hard place. I don't doubt his sincerity but he's up against forces which have been allowed to run amok and run the country: i.e. the corporations and industries. And that cracker Joe Wilson - that was beyond the pale of rudeness. Now that's un-American.

JM - Okay, so it isn't just me! :-) I didn't understand the Spaniards in Barcelona nearly as well as I thought I would. Although, more than one elderly waiter, when offered a choice, preferred my Portuguese to English. I guess that makes sense. The young people, though, seem to enjoy speaking English. That is also my experience with my young Portuguese cousins. I like to improve my Portuguese and they want to improve their English!

  5. The efforts to demonize Chavez by the corporate media are so laughable. I'm glad you don't fall for them.

  6. At the risk of sounding naive, I'm a fan of Hugo's. He surely isn't perfect, but then, show me who is!

  7. Libhom - demonizing Latin American leaders who, by their fierce determination to self-govern, become unpopular with the U.S. government and major media, well, that's been going on for decades. So when I see this crap, it just makes me laugh bitterly at how irrationally is still the way to control the opinions of the populace. Or. Something like that! :-D

  8. CR - I don't know the man so I can't really say if I like him. But he does come across persuasively and genuinely in the video, doesn't he? What's at heart here is the silly propaganda. Which isn't so silly if you consider how this little country has the US. as a thorn in its side constantly.

  9. Oh. And how about Oliver Stone? What a commie pinko he is!!! Ha!

  10. Unfortunately it doesn't look good for the continued sanity of even a wisp of truth in the USA because so many damned citizens believe the bullshite lobbed around about Latin American leaders (among others, of course). I hear some arguments regarding Chavez and the audacity of many of them makes me wonder what planet I have absorbed myself in...

Why I love him so much...

  12. Thanks for the "heads up" about this documentary. I'll look for it for sure. Stone is a Vietnam Vet, like myself, and served in the same division, the 25th Infantry Division. The movie "Platoon" was about the unit I served in in 1969.
We buy our gasoline from Citgo stations. That's Venezuelan oil. Chavez's policies allowed heating oil to impoverished people at reduced prices, many Native Americans living in poverty. Read current info about the oil giveaway here:

Google Citgo Chavez and see the articles about people up in arms about Chavez. In my opinion, if corporate capitalism hates him so much, he must be good!

    Peace!

  13. PS The first commenter, Dianne quotes:

"we need someone with real balls - I suggest a woman ;)"

I agree. I was hopeful that Pelosi would be such a woman, but after looking under her skirt, I see the usual.

  14. Spado and Poetry (men) :-) hi!

Poetryman - demonizaton has become ingrained in US foreign policy, that much is clear.

Spado - yeah, the Venezuelan oil. Joseph Kennedy's (another pinko-commie!) Citizen's Energy Corp. was all embroiled in controversy over accepting Venezuelan oil. I'm sure you know about that. And I agree with your ending sentiment!

  15. Spado - ha! I know what you mean about Pelosi and you don't have to explain about the girls thing. I totally get it, of course!

    PM - me, too! :-)

Peace, love and all groovy things to all!
