  1. i really enjoy leighton- i am also a fan of waterhouse but i am unsure if he did nudes. i am more of the romantic type and not so much modernist (and yes, i make up my own words :) not a fan of rivera- the boobs are strangely shaped.

  2. How wonderful to return to blogs and my first thing was the Friday Evening Nudes.

The Leighton is lovely - I really wish more full bodied women featured in advertising, modeling and images all around us today. But what are those goofy black fish/whales/dolphins in the background? They made me grin.

And the Rivera... So pendulous - so tactile (or at least I can't help but think of touching, of holding). His paintings/compositions always feel hands-on, to me. Like sculpture. I want to run my hands over the forms, to feel their weight and warmth. And he uses exaggeration to drive the emotions - quite effectively, I think. A kind of visual poetic license.

  3. Picasso femme seems to be thinking "Put down the damn brush and come fan me! Or at least bring me a lemonade?"

Personally, I'd be more excited about viewing a pod of orcas, than Sir Leighton's lovely seems to be. ;-/

Right there w/ ya, Steve. ;-) (Thanks, Diego!)

  4. Hi, Bet!

Waterhouse painted beautiful, idealized nudes. Like if nudes could breath, Waterhouse's nudes would be breathing rather rapidly. ;-)

Steve! How excellent you came by! I'm happy to see you.

I wondered about the pod of whales in the background of the Leighton. They don't work in the painting well and are almost cartoon-like.

The Rivera is my favorite of this set, actually. I'd never seen this particular Rivera until recently when I spend what must have been at least two hours on an art hunt through the web. The model's breasts are sensual as well as sensuous. As is the torso and back of the nude in nude with calla lilies - the flesh is almost clay-like.

jcf: Great comment. She looks either bored or has just awakened from a cat nap. :-)

Diva: awards, plural?? I'll have to check it out, then!
