Camera Critters # 26

A few weeks ago as W.P. and I were driving home from the peach orchard, we spotted this beautiful painted turtle crossing the road. W.P. pulled over and ran to rescue it from passing cars. We took it for a little ride to a local lake surrounded by woodse, which is a part of a local reservoir. Enjoy, critter lovers!

  1. Aren't you mean, turning him upside down. I'm sure you turned him back quickly. - But then, it's probably a her isn't it. Was she on her way to dig a nest? A pretty one.

  3. This turtle is beautiful from the top but also upside down, because then you can see the other colours better.
    Have a great weekend!

  4. Bobbie: He was very much protected inside his shell. I suppose we should have taken it off the road and let it go about its business. I hope it will be happy in its new digs nonetheless.

Thank you for commenting, Dirk and Reader.

  5. Great find! The red underneath is really vibrant.
I don't know for sure about painted turtles but box turtles should be placed across the road in the direction in which they are going. They live in the same area all their lives and can die if you remove them.
Not sure if that's the same for painted ones.
Just thought I'd pass that along because it's something I'm aware of.
He should be watched over because of your kindness. :)

  7. I was curious so I looked it up and came back to tell you my research said sometimes you find painted turtles crossing the road looking for NEW territory. So unlike box turtles they move around. I thought that was great news and wanted to let you know it was a wonderful rescue.

  8. Cute turtle. Yeah I just recently learned that you should just move them out of harms way because they only live in a relatively small area (in comparison to other animals). Hopefully he makes it okay.

  9. How pretty is he??!!

My daughter's children found the shell of a turtle that must have been old, since he was so big. The shell was at least 9" across in the middle. The bottom was still attached too.

  11. I think that it is great that you save him from danger. He will live a long and happy life in his new home. And seeing as how handsome he is, I don't think he will be lonely for long. Lisa

  15. Carletta: thanks for getting back to me on that. I felt really badly that perhaps we'd not done the right thing. We figured it was safer where we brought it because there are no cars. Where we found it is a very traveled road in a suburban neighborhood.

To everyone who came by, thanks for the nice words about the turtle: it really was a beauty.

  16. I think you did the right thing for sure! I can't stand the thought of the little guy getting run over by a car. He's a cute painted turtle and glad you took the time to stop and pick him up a rescue him!

  19. thank you for your turtle rescue. We have only managed to save a few this year and I can't tell you how many dead turtles I've found on the roads around here. It breaks my heart!

  20. How nice of you to rescue turtle, please tell me you didn't leave him on his back. ;) They are beautiful!

  21. I love the colors, and I'm glad you came along to rescue it so it wouldn't get run over. I saw one in our road awhile ago, and I too moved him so he wouldn't get hit.

  22. hehhe...I perhaps shouldn't have sequenced the photos that way! :P

Of course I didn't leave it on its back!! That would be bad karma!

Regardng your question on my blog... yes, the plane wreckage is a landmark on the mountain. My husband was excited to finally see it in person. Thanks for visiting!
