Suzanne Valadon
(a fascinating biography)
Suzanne Valadon (original name Marie-Clémentine Valadon) was born in 1865 at Bessines-sur-Gartempe, near Limoges, an illegitimate daughter of a French laundress. From age nine on she supported herself by doing odd jobs. One was as a circus acrobat. She did it until she fell off the trapeze when she was sixteen. Looking for a safer occupation, she became an artists' model. posing for such artists as Pierre Puvis de Chavannes, Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, and Pierre-Auguste Renoir.

Henry- Edmond Cross

  2. You two must be city folk! ;-)

Bryan - I giggled at your icon. That's how Bob Marley justified driving a BMW. :-)

  3. A fascinating group of paintings, Gina. I'm afraid I don't have the foggiest idea who the artist in the bottom (ha!) painting is...probably Monet with a new prescription for his glasses! ;)

  9. Beautiful set! We are back from a camping and kayaking trip (just Dearest and I) and tired out. I will comment at more length later.

The Renoir (last one in set) was a huge labor of love for him, taking many months, and was then not received as he wished. He was, as I recall, struggling with Impressionism (as a style and method) and more classical techniques and concerns. He eventually resolved all of that in his own unique way.

More later! Thanks for posting these!

  10. What a great collection. I was too late for the contest but since my answer would have been Picasso I guess I'd have lost.

  11. Steve - what you say is so evident in this painting. It's a style "on the fence", so to speak. I'm looking forward to more commentary from you.

Susan - Ha! Picasso with a Monet influence, huh? :-)
