  1. Swish indeed! What wonderful movement and dynamism ...

  2. Eh. It's art where you DO "look at the brush strokes".

  3. I imagine he was very fashionable and sometimes avant-garde, in his time. I had not encountered him before yet seem to know the styles. In your examples, the backgrounds reflect a number of abstract styles propular in the early 20th century.

    I imagine him much-imitated too.

  4. Once again, you've introduced me to an artist whose work was unfamiliar. I immediately loved the first one - the fact that her torso is the focal point and everything else fades into a mildly recognizable jumble seems very realistic to me in that it's the way almost anyone would react to the scene. It appears to be the way he chose to portray his nudes throughout his career and with very successful and sensual results.

After looking at all of the ones you've chosen many more times than once I have to say my absolute favorite is Leda and the Swan. It's wonderful.

  7. What a modern feminine aesthetic for a guy who died in 1931 - not all painters from his day have dodged looking dated. Beautiful!
