Artist of the Week

Desire and consumption are at the heart of this lush and ultra-realistic installation. Inspired by the bountiful Vanitas still-life paintings of 16th-century Northern Europe and the excessive ornamentation of the Baroque period, Staschke seduces the viewer with his voluptuous organic forms while exploring themes of excess and its effects. A master ceramicist whose work has been shown internationally, Staschke is best know for his banquet style displays of flora, fauna and food. Art Knowledge News

" Like an extravagant meal, the arrangements we make to further our desires can come with painful unintended consequences. My recent body of work explores notions of gluttony and cultural excess. "
~ Dirk Staschke

How To Remove Word Verification if you want to make it easier for commentors:

    1) Make sure you are in the old Blogger interface. If you're on the new Blogger Interface, click the cog-like icon in the upper right corner of your blog settings screens. Select "Old Blogger Interface."

    2) Go into your settings.

    3) Select "Comments."

    4) Under "Who Can Comment?" I would suggest either "Anyone" or "Registered Users (this one keeps anonymous posters from commenting if you so desire).

    5) Under "Comment Form Placement" I would suggest "Full Page" or "Pop-up" since some folks are having a tough time viewing and commenting on embedded forms.

    6) Scroll down the page a bit and look for "Comment Moderation." You might want to allow moderation on posts older than 14 days because very old posts sometimes seem to be spam magnets. Include your email address if you want notifications of comments left on you blog posts which are older than 14 days, if you selected the above option.

    7) Under "Show Word Verification for Comments?" Please select NO.

    8) Save these changes to your settings.

    9) Return to the new Blogger interface, if you wish by clicking on your Dashboard and clicking "Try the updated Blogger interface."

  5. His work is definitely ingenious and a very astute take on over-excess in our society. I love the elegance of all his sculptures but my favorite (I'm not sure why) is the tower of cakes.

I'm not sure if you heard about this show done last autumn in LA but it seemed to me that although the intent may have been similar the presentation was distasteful.

  6. Those cakes are just amazing! But, I prefer the music to the pastels of the installations.

  7. I was going to say that I liked the one with the stack of cakes on the table too. That seems to be the popular one. I think maybe because it looks like it could topple over at a moment's notice.

Plus, who doesn't like cake? ;D
