Characters on Canvas

The work of Alan Macdonald

"It took me years to realise that it is the darkness in things that I respond to, whether it is a painting by Francisco Goya, a song by Leonard Cohen, a play by William Shakespeare or a film by Pedro Almodovar."

Wonderful! What a playful take on Goya!

I can relate to what he's saying. The darkness can be very appealing and draws you in.

Oh, I like this very much. The thing I like most about darkness is that it helps us define the light.

Fascinating. The sunglasses are the coup de grace.

And for me it is the light in/on things that I respond to... And I think it's getting more obvious in recent work.

What a very odd painting. I love the line from the song....and the ravens. Just a bit dark for my days. Today we had the Association for the BLIND here to do an assessment. LOL They are going to provide a talking watch and talking clock. Also put some BIG DOTS that can be felt on appliances. May help. Hello darkness my old friend. That could be either blindness or depression. Either way I go on too long! I enjoyed the painting!

She was smiling because she was happy — 83 percent happy, to be exact, according to scientists from the University of Amsterdam.
