(I actually saw this live at The Tate. I believe WP had time to take a nap in Trafalgar Square while I stood riveted to this painting)
I'm feeling rather gloomy and grumpy. Firstly, WP has been in California for the last ten days (due home tomorrow). Then there is the matter of our sadness and dismay over Prop 8 passing, as well as very ill feelings toward Washington regarding the "bail- out".
I needed me a beauty break.

I think we all need a break right now and a beauty break seems like just the thing. Thank you as always for your insightful posts, and lovely pictures. The Prop 8 thing in CA is really disappointing -- more than that really. My thoughts are with you.

I've long held the opinion that all art represented spiritual connections up until the the time when its power to inspire was transferred to advertising commodities. There was an interim during which the churches used art to instruct an illiterate public and naturally, a period when popes, kings and merchants sought to memorialize their egos through portraits. Artists were thus able to earn enough of a living that they were able to continue painting the essence of what truly interested them. This is a fine example.
