    Was it Michaelangelo who said, re sculpting, "I just chipped away everything that wasn't 'David'"?

    Mme. Laurencin seems to have approached white canvasses as, "I'll just paint everything that isn't illuminated flesh".

    I like these - the self portrait is stunning, and amazingly honest, I think. What a face - a face I could picture seeing people this way, and painting this way.

    And I like JCF's comment about "painting everything that isn't illuminated flesh." That seems especially true of the last one.

    Many thanks. That self portrait may have done something inside me... I've been considering another self portrait; this may have nudged me over the edge.

    Re: The self-portrait. Marie captured herself in a way that makes me want to know more about her. I found a lot of these little paintings just so sweet and touching. Just really baby-breathtaking. :-)

    Judy: Mme Chanel. Yes. It was hard to choose which Laurencins to feature. I'm glad you like it, as it's one of my favorite of all I saw online. :-)
