  1. I love black and white nudes. These are an excellent set of different themes.

  3. Re Helmut Newton: fetish much? ;-p

When female nudes are photographed, I confess I have trouble maintaining artistic distance: I find myself ranking, ala "I'd do her first, then her, then..." Very objectified . . . but that's just the way my brain works.

[Great: w/ that TMI, there went my chance to have a relationship w/ any your female readers, Gina! ;-X]

  4. jcf: I doubt that, luv. I applaud you, as always, for your honesty. I'm straight and yet that Palazzolo nude is beyond gorgeous. You know, that's my body in my 30's and I love it - does that make me some sort of narcissist? Who cares! :-)

  5. I hope that last photo isn't too over the top. It was a phase I was going through...hehehe. Seriously, I find that Newton photo theatrical and as if the subject could spring alive at any moment and say something to you.

  8. Aaaaaaah, Kelly. You're such a kind soul. I'm glad we met in the blogosphere.

CR: I'm glad you liked the nudes. And your comment about being in love again: art does that you. :-)

  9. I liked these - but like jcf I find photos "closer" than paintings, and I can't quite separate from the real person. So I have to make an effort to view them "simply" as art, rather than as the record of a beautiful moment, and a beautiful body in extraordinary light.

The first is quite complex, as a form, for just one body. Marvelous. Look at all the different shapes, insides and outsides, and the feeling of an embrace.

I LOVE the way the braid and the ace echo each other somehow in the second. The high contrast on the figure reduces everything to simple playing-card black and white. And that high right shoulder... lovely. Great economy and fidelity to a message.

Beautiful figure and composition in the third - so many lovely shapes. But something in the face and the tight grip of the arms accentuates the nakedness of the figure - the exposure. Deliberately? I'd bet so. It's also augmented by the decision to have the model looking directly into the lense - not common in art photo nudes, but more common in other nude photography...

The fourth reminded me of movie stereotypes of Nazis even before I read the artist's ever so German name. Definitely a case of recognizing the artistry while feeling none of the appeal, personally. Not my kind of image, figure, model, costume, use of lines (especially the rope), composition, etc. But that's part of what makes it interesting.
