Bad Art Or Not?

David Cerny's Piss has two bronze sculptures peeing into an enclosure that is actually a map of the Cezch Republic. The stream of water writes quotes from famous Prague residents. Visitors can interrupt them by sending SMS messages from mobile phones to a number displayed next to the sculptures. The living statue then ‘writes’ the text of the message, before carrying on as before.

And for those of you interested in furthering your appreciation of this piece (ha!):

Bad art or not?

  1. I'm on the fence for good/bad. But it definitely makes a statement.

  2. I don't think it's art. It's just a gimmick. But I suppose it could be fun.

  3. Bobbie - it made me laugh out loud. I was wearing the headphones so I wasn't aware that I was giggling so loudly. W.P. kept asking from two rooms away "what? what's so funny??"

  4. Perhaps it could be called 'inanimate performance art'

I like it and if I was there I'd be trying to get it to write some really good (naughty) stuff

  7. I'm trying to decide which is better -- this or Fran's Electric Jesus Pickle video.

    Thanks for the laugh, Pagan!

  8. I didn't know what to think. I was immediately reminded of the episode of Red Dwarf where Lister has become the richest man on earth, has built a palace, bought Buckingham Palace to have it ground up for gravel for his driveway, and is having a party where his guests will be served champagne from a 50 foot tall fountain statue of himself... I think you get the picture. Funny, disgusting, provocative, enraging to some I bet, it certainly carries a message. The fact that anyone can use modern technology to get the statue to piss any message they like on the Czech Republic, their 15 seconds of urinary fame, might be the deepest part of this for me. Just because I don't like the message or the messengers doesn't mean it isn't art - but I genuinely don't like it. Amused by it - but hate it, too.

  9. I want one of Bush and his pals and co- conspirators standing around pissing on US and the Constitution. it's a start.

  10. My feeling about controversial art is that I'm relieved when it's allowed to flourish. Even if I hate it. Even when the message is unclear or clearly deplorable.

When art like this is not allowed to be displayed to the public, we are in real trouble.

As it is,in this country there is a banning of funding for the arts because of controversy.

What Utah Savage is commissioning (hehe) would likely not see the light of day in this country. I don't think, anyway. I would be interested to know what the price tag for such an installation is. I just can't imagine it displayed in a major museum like MoMA. They can display a clay penis hanging from a meat hook from the ceiling, but two robots pissing on the constitution? I dunno.

Please feel free to differ and you don't have to beg. ;-)

  12. Again, it is well made - and frankly, it's hilarious - but yes, it is most definately art. And I agree completely that it must not be censored.

    Definately art. Good art.

  13. I agree, Jood. It's pretty cool, actually. I especially like how their pelvises gyrate. :-)

  16. It is glorious, hilarious, and gorgeous. No fence sitting for me. Art.

I need to make a pilgrimage.

  17. I think it is good art, but I like conceptual art that makes people uncomfortable.
