A Victory!

I heard about his at Mad Priest's site and shortly after got this in my email from The Human Rights Campaign, an organization to which I will be contributing a little more generously this year with a portion of my "stimulation" check. Supergirl One and the Beloved will be thrilled when they wake up! :-) They've been so sleep deprived all through finals that at 2:30 p.m. they may very well still be sleeping. The Beloved is a California resident.

Same-sex couples win the right to marry in California!their relationships have so long been denied.

Today, California's highest court ruled that denying same-sex couples the right to marry is unconstitutional, granting loving, committed gay and lesbian couples the dignity and support
Two words sum up how I feel at this moment: proud and determined.
I'm proud of Shannon Minter of the National Center for Lesbian Rights, who argued this case, and all the advocates who worked tirelessly to make this day possible. More than anything, I am proud of you and all of HRC's supporters who, rather than backing down in response to bigotry and hate, have continued this fight.

And I'm determined to make this win stick. Our right-wing opponents are using this moment to build a $10 million war chest for an amendment this November to ban same-sex marriage in California.

That's why we've set up a special fund to direct 100% of your gift today to this fight in California. Don't let them use our victory to get the upper hand.
Donate today and send your dollars straight to California to protect this victory for equality!

I would love to tell you to take a day to sit back and enjoy this momentous victory. While this win is certainly a reason to celebrate, this is not a day to rest easy.
In fact, sitting back is exactly the reaction the right-wing is hoping for. We can't afford to let them turn our success into their win.

Focus on the Family, the National Organization for Marriage and their anti-gay friends want to write discrimination into the constitution of the most populous state in our country and undo what we've achieved today.

The National Organization for Marriage's own web site is calling on their supporters to give $10 million so they can blanket the state with anti-gay messages in the coming months.
They think you'll be too busy celebrating to notice as they amass their millions. I think they're wrong.

HRC is a member of Equality for All, the coalition of groups working together to defeat the marriage ban in California. Funds raised today will go to support Equality for All's efforts.
Click here to make a gift that will go straight to California to keep discrimination out of the constitution! This is a momentous day. Let's make sure it doesn't become a piece of history this November.

  1. It is a great victory. Times like this are when I wish I had money. I really haven't ever particularly cared if I had any or not - except when I find a cause I would like to help.
Social Security has been a blessing to me for many years. It paid me Survivor Benefits for my children for ten years. It gave me partial benefits after I turned 62 and was still working allowing me to get that new refrigerator and stove. And now it still gives me almost enough to live on, plus Medicare. But it just doesn't stretch quite far enough. Still, it lets me live so much better than so many others are able.
I can do little things for other charities from time to time, but this one stumps me. I hope your readers do come through.

  2. The Beloved and I were, indeed happy. We actually found out about it promptly at 1pm eastern time because we knew well in advance that they'd be announcing it today at 10am pacific! We follow these things. ;)

All in all it's an amazing victory, and a huge, HUGE important step. Unfortunately the backlash is going to be pretty severe, but I think [for once I'm not being a pessimist!] that the voters of CA will come through and defeat the initiative. It's going to take dedication and $$, though.

The great part is that this decision CANNOT be appealed to the Supreme Court of the US [despite the bullshit that CNN is incorrectly reporting about it possibly being appealed] because the issue is restricted to California State Constitutional issues, and SCOTUS has no jurisdiction over that.
The other great part is that it is unlikely that a ballot initiative will propose [or win if it does propose it] taking away the rights of couples that get married between this decision and the Nov. initiative- there is a 30 day hold on this, but after 30 days, whoever manages to get married is very likely going to stay married.

:) YAY! We're getting married, we really are. <3

  5. Let them eat cake!

No. That's not what I meant to say.

Let them rant and rave and call out to their little god! This is a great first step and now we must keep the momentum before the prehistoric zealots snatch it back.

  6. Bobbie: We can only do so much. This is the first year that I'm contributing to HRC. I am trying to spread my limited money over four organizations...I gave up a new camera. Mine isn't very good but it works. In your case, as it is for many older Americans, you're quite limited. I know from seeing how simply W.P.'s mom lives - she is 86. Nice to hear from you, Bobbie!

Supergirl: Well, how great is this, huh? I think you ought to go straighten out those guys at CNN!

I love you, darlin' and I'm so happy for what this means for you and your Beloved; indeed for all the GLBT folk who want to get married. I think it also raises the consciessness of the society to begin adjusting to the idea that GLBT people are entitled to equal rights. It's going to take more time, but it will happen.

Ben, Mark and Dianne - thanks for for stopping by in solidarity! Our family thanks you!
