The Elders

Peter Gabriel, one of my favorite recording artists, is also a strong champion of global human rights. I visited his homepage today and found a link to The Elders: Every Human Has Rights, which is made up of a group of world renowed global figures who have launched various campagins to advocate on behalf of human rights issues around the planet.

The mission of The Elders is to hold goverments and leaders worldwide accountable to the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. It is made up of some powerful voices: Nelson Mandela, Desmond Tutu, Mary Robinson and our very own Jimmy Carter, among them.

I found this effort so uplifting and so worthwhile! When I get discouraged, I search for hope. If little else, it is at least a comfort to me and I hope to you, to know of noble endeavors like The Elders. This restores some balance to my uneven faith in humanity.

2008 is the Universal Declaration of Human Rights 60th anniversary. You can sign the declaration at The Elders website.
